According to a recent eMarketer article, MySpace generated about $440 million in advertisting this fiscal year. The article goes on to show that about $1.3 billion in advertising revenue will be generated by social media sites in 2008.
$1.3 billion in revenue for sites that don't ask users (usually) to pay a dime. Sites that don't produce a bit of their own content. Sites that invest a lot in development of tools that members use for free.
