Of course you do.
You do sing in your car. You may say that you don't. You may even believe that you don't-- but you do. Really. I've seen you. Here is what else you do and don't know you do.
1. You create online content. What's that you say? You don't have a blog or moderate a discussion board. True. But you do use Google and every search you do is tracked and available via tools like trends.google.com. And every day marketers use information on your searches to make decisions that impact the way they do business. You also shop on Amazon.com. And every page you view and purchase you make is tracked. This information is the provided to consumers like me when we make a buying decision. See attached picture.
2. You do navigational searches. When I meet with clients I explain that, depending upon who you believe, about 40% of all searchers are navigational searches. Meaning the searcher know exactly where he or she wants to go and types a URL or company name into a search engine. Often times I'm met with a look of doubt. Then I point out that when we look at the client's website metrics software we see that the most common referring term to the site is the company URL and second most common is the company name. Still in doubt, I'll ask my subject to go to Eba. They type "Eba.com" into a Google search box.
3. You read a blog. I know you may not have a My Space page or follow your favorite band. But that column you read every day? That headline on your Yahoo! homepage? That website you go to first thing in in the morning for news about your industry, neighborhood or kid's baseball team? They are all blogs, really. A recent report on blog readership says 4 out of 10 Americans read blogs. My opinion is that this is much higher, it's just that the other 6 folks don't realize it. Just like they don't realize they belt out "Carry On My Wayward Son" every time it comes on the radio.
