Social media monitoring services also provide useful metrics on competitors, and your own brand actually. ViralHeat and Radian6 are good examples.

Thanks Travis, I have not seen ViralHeat, but have been impressed with tools like Radian6, Techrigy, Trucast and DNA 13. There is a lot of investment and development in this space now as brands realize the importance of consumer generated media.
